Building confidence, preventing falls.
Under the leadership of Dr L. Atanelov, Steady Strides is at the forefront of pioneering comprehensive rehabilitation and medical care for older adults at risk of falls. We are proud to be the nation’s first comprehensive fall prevention medical institute.
According to CDC guidelines patients are at high risk of falls if they experienced two falls within one year, or at least one traumatic fall (involving a bone fracture). Also, patients may be at high risk of falls if they or their loved ones are noticing balance or gait deficits or have concerns about falling.
At Steady Strides you will work with Dr. Atanelov, a fall prevention specialist physician. Dr. Atanelov diagnoses the underlying causes of falling, losing balance or having gait deficits. Then he provides a tailor-made rehabilitation and medical treatment plan for effective management.
Dr. Atanelov works with an in-house team of highly trained physical and occupational therapists who specialize in fall prevention for seniors. Together, the physician and therapists work as a cohesive team discussing patients and analyzing the best strategies to improve their outcomes. Steady Strides offers a comprehensive one stop shop for individuals at risk of falls, covered by insurance.
Dr. Atanelov uses human biomechanics and gait analysis training to thoroughly assess and diagnose the specific medical conditions causing falls and impairing balance and gait. These conditions may include syncope, dysautonomia, orthostatic hypotension, peripheral neuropathy, joint pain/restricted range of motion, myelopathy, spasticity, movement disorders (such as Parkinson’s), limb paralysis (such as stroke), vestibular deficits (such as vertigo), sarcopenia, frailty and others.
In addition to offering cutting edge, evidence-based clinical interventions for preventing falls both in the community and in residential facilities, we work closely with the State of Maryland and Baltimore City to develop public health interventions for preventing falls. We also provide fall prevention education for clinicians and the general public, as well as opportunities for students interested in fall prevention medicine to shadow our providers and engage in research.
